Altars
Altars are so important because they’re a place to center your heart and spirit. They should contain objects which you love to look at and feel. It is a mirror that reflects you in large and small ways.
Altars can vary depending on the culture and beliefs of a person. But it can contain anything which means something for you: a leaf or stone from a walk, a shell you brought home from the beach, a tarot card, etc. The important thing is that it has to mean something deep and heart-centered to you. In some ways, the altar reminds me of a scrapbook. These are memories that make you feel good and bring back a particular experience or life event. The objects should be a reflection of you—your memories, dreams, and wishes.
Your altar can be changed up as little or as often as you like. Again, it is what moves you, what is important to you, and how you spiritually connect in this lifetime. In some traditions, the alter varies based on the seasons or rhythms of the year. For example, for those who recognize Samhein, honored on October 31st or November 1st, the alter may contain objects to honor those who are loved but have passed on to the other side (such as a photo). In Mexico, Día de los Muertos, which takes place in early November each year, is a time to celebrate loved ones who have passed by preparing their favorite foods and elaborately decorating altars in their honor.
Keep in mind, anyone from any belief system and background can have an altar. They are a daily part of people’s lives the world over, from all religions and cultures. Remember this: at the heart of an altar is one’s heart.
Some people like to keep their altar in the same room in which they meditate. Others prefer to keep their altar tucked away in a part of the house where others do not go. There is no right or wrong way to do this.
My altar is in my office, behind my desk where I work and create. Anyone coming into my office will see my altar. I’m fine with that. And if they ask questions about my altar, or are drawn to it, I always request: “You can go look, but please don’t touch anything on it.” I don’t want anyone’s energy on any of the objects I’ve chosen to represent me/my heart, except me. Although, Gracie, my dog, loves the altar and will often sleep behind me as near as she can get to it, she understands that what is there is sacred. Your altar is sacred to you. No one should touch it without you being there and with your permission.
For me, my altar always lifts my spirit and heart. Nothing is on there that isn’t of a happy moment in my life, or about a particular person, experience, or place that I spent quality time in. So, even on a bad day when I’m grumpy because I haven’t slept well, just looking at my altar takes me out of that space and makes me feel so much better. It never fails to do that for me.
Your altar is a testament of you and who you are or are becoming. There is no right or wrong way to create an altar. Whatever you place upon it, it is right for you. Give yourself the gift of an altar and watch what happens. You will feel the energy rise and congregate in the space you have chosen to have it in your home. Have fun!
