Working with circles
The circle is the most powerful of all our symbols. Sometimes, you’ll see a circle on the earth’s skin—usually, it’s a “fairy ring” of mushrooms or wildflowers in a circle. Other times, it’s a circle of bushes or trees to indicate that something special lurks there. Maybe you’ll come upon a bushy area filled with all kinds of trees, grass, and plants, then suddenly there is an open spot that has nothing in it or maybe just sparse bits of grass or plants growing here and there. Most everything else grows outside of the circle. I refer to these as “bare circles.” When you come upon a bare circle, especially if it’s in a plant-infested area, it’s going to stick out like a sore thumb, and you’ll notice it right away.
This can be an indicator of a vortex or a portal—a gateway or doorway leading down into the earth. Many times, there is a tunnel on the other side. Or it will look like a wormhole floating and twisting and going somewhere, but you can’t see where the end of it is. It could also be an ancient ceremonial site once used by the indigenous people of your area. Ground yourself and then pull out your trusty pendulum and ask which of the above it might be and then check out the different chapters in this book for details on each phenomenon.
If it’s an ancient ceremonial circle, then ask your pendulum a lot of questions, such as, “What was the circle used for? Is it still operating today? Does it have a spirit guardian?” If the answer is yes, stop, ground yourself once more, close your eyes, and call the guardian to you. Ask them questions, especially, “May I enter the circle, or not?” Other questions to ask if no guardian appears: “Is it safe to enter?” (Some places are not safe). “Is this connected with a nearby burial ground?”
A burial ground may not be visible, but a spirit who makes sure no one enters the area will guard the area’s energy. I never enter a burial site. I honor what it is and so should you. Some sacred areas exist where the indigenous people of North America were buried above ground. There may or may not be a circle involved in that area. If this is the case, and there is no circle, but you feel warned to stop, do not enter the area because the spirit guardian at such a burial site will take no prisoners. However, the guardian for such a burial area should show up. If your pendulum says, “Yes, there is a guardian,” then ground yourself and call for them at least three times and be patient. If no guardian shows up, but your pendulum says “yes” when you ask if this is a burial site, do not go into it. If you do, the invisible guardian could make an accident befall you. The guardian has its ways. Respect that space, find out how wide and long it is so you don’t accidentally step into it, and then leave it alone. It needs nothing from you except to keep it free of humans tramping through. I would suggest you leave a gift of cornmeal before you go. This is a sign of goodwill.
