Part 1: Spirit Guides – Who Are They, What Do They Do For Us, And How To Work With Them

We all have a number of spirit guides. Some are transient to help us through a certain point in our life, while others are with us for a lifetime to help us stay on our incarnation path. The Susan Seddon Boulet painting above of a woman with a fox around her head is what many of them look like at some point. Some are a head dress but they move about also; some wrap around your neck, shoulders, or arms—such as snake spirit guides; others, such as birds, sit on the shoulders; while smaller spirit guides like insects, mice, gophers, guinea pigs, etc., ride upon the tops of your shoes like fancy shoe laces.
Most people have between 4-6 guides; however this can change throughout your lifetime based on certain decisions you make which release one guide and call in another because its knowledge is needed to help you move forward on your path.
Each spirit guide brings certain skills with them and each is expert at something. For example, this painting for me represents the fox guide working with its mistress—usually during ceremonies. Why do I say this? Because the spirit guide is on her crown chakra, directing vibrational energy….either for the woman herself or the energy coming from the ethers, through her, and flowing out of her and into others or a surrounding area.
The fox may also be at a higher energy than the woman’s auric vibrational frequency, and acts like a cosmic “antenna” bringing in a message, and stepping it down vibrationally so that it doesn’t blow the woman’s physical head apart. Too high of a vibrational frequency coming into our aura can shred an auric field, damage a chakra, or shatter the entire aura around us. The spirit guide is essential when this is occurring. Spirit guides are highly trained and work to modulate frequencies and vibration according to our own energetic systems. You might say, in an electric power sense, they are “transformers” where the actual stepping down process takes place so you can utilize the energy, but not get burned by it.
But let’s go back to the beginning and build you a picture, as well as a common pattern that happens to all of us who incarnate into a human form. At the beginning, your soul/spirit, is in counsel with teachers and your Chief Guide (CG) in the other dimensions. Their job is to hear what your soul wants to do, to learn a particular skill, such as, let’s say, compassion for others, and the counselors will suggest certain scenarios where that goal, by the soul/spirit, can be their map and path for a coming incarnation and lifetime here on Earth. And, there is also the added onus in every lifetime, to pay back karma you have accrued over hundreds, if not thousands, of lifetimes. For example, if you killed another human being out of anger or revenge, then you will more than likely reap what you sow in another lifetime. Most souls balance out karma payback with some worthy, positive goal that they want to learn or become. Once the details are sorted and mapped out, the soul/spirit, with the help of the counselors, chooses a country and parent(s) that their spirit will be born into.
It is at this point, long before the mother becomes pregnant with said soul/spirit, that the counselors also bring in spirit guides to assist in that coming incarnation. There is a basic set of spirit guides, all who no longer need human incarnations, and who volunteer and serve others. There are things spirit guides can and can’t do for you. They are aware of your karma and of your plans to educate yourself. They can never step in and stop a “lesson” that you need to go through in order to learn something that you wanted to learn in this incarnation. You take your lumps, so to speak. They are there to ensure your safety if you’re supposed to survive the karma, and help pick up the pieces of you, afterward.
There are other situations that you make in an incarnation that are free-will choice and you get entangled in a situation. Your guides are there to protect and extract you from it, or do what needs to be done to keep you alive/protected so you can remain on your mapped out path of learning/education in this lifetime.
Let me give you a personal experience of mine to drill home how important spirit guides are to you. I was five years old and my parents had planned a Saturday picnic in the Cascade Mountains. I had ran ahead in the grass and weeds which were almost as tall as I was. I was running parallel to a huge ditch that had been dug a hundred years or so, before. It was dry, filled with weeds and brush. I suddenly heard a rattling sound. One of my guides stopped me from running any farther forward. I was confused. The rattling continued and it was very close to me. I knew it was a snake. I didn’t panic, but I couldn’t see it so I could step away from it and not get bitten.
That ditch was roughly 50-100 feet wide. I suddenly felt this sense of movement, my eyelids shut (I didn’t shut them, the guide did) and I felt myself flying or moving, but I didn’t know how. I tried to open my eyes, but I couldn’t. I felt my feet touch the earth solidly and my eyelids popped open. I was now standing exactly opposite of where I had been moments before! Confused, I looked around. I didn’t hear the snake. And I turned and looked back at my parents who were still at the car, getting a blanket and basket out of the trunk. I realized I was on the other side of this ditch from the rattlesnake. I went running back toward them, not understanding what had happened. How could I, a five-year-old, leap across that wide, deep trench? Even at five, I knew it was impossible.
It wasn’t until I was much older, that I realized my Chief Guide had teleported and moved me from the third dimensional world we all live in into the fourth dimension. He had lifted me up, transferred me into the fourth dimension, taken me across the ditch and gently set me down, bringing me back into the third dimension. No wonder I was confused and disoriented! But the Chief Guide had saved me from being bitten by a rattlesnake. That was not part of my incarnation path, so the CG removed the danger. That was in 1951, when snake antivenom probably wasn’t available and we were so far up into the mountains, that there was no nearby hospital for most likely a hundred miles. I would have died. And so, because it wasn’t my time to leave this life, my Chief Guide sprang into action and made the decision he did to save my life.
I have countless experiences over this lifetime where my Chief Guide or other guides, stepped in and saved my life or saved me from serious injury. When I was a firefighter in Ohio, from 1981-1983, there were several times I should have died or been seriously injured, but they protected me so I could stay on my path. Everyone has at least one experience where something “weird” happened, but they were saved, protected, and didn’t die when they could have. Look back on your life….you’ll see them. And these are times when your spirit guides, or your Chief Guide, stepped in and protected you.
