Walking the Land with Marchiene
For millions of years, humankind has worked with the energy of the place where they lived. They were aware that energies were created by the geography and the geology of the land. They knew water was an important part of this energy being what it is. When humans interacted with the land spirits/energy, “magic” happened and there was a common resonance between the seen and unseen. But it took a person or people to catalyze an area and connect with it from the heart. And if you do this in your local area, you will reawaken the spirits and energy where you live, and you work in heart and partnership with them. If you’re interested in learning more, read Walking the Land by Eileen Nauman to find out how to contact and connect with them.
My sidekick, good friend, and sister hiker on many of our sacred weekend jaunts is Marchiene von Reinstra. We did a lot of pioneering work in the Verde Valley of central Arizona, in and around Sedona. It took us two years and it sure was amazing. We’re happy to be able to present our findings and share them with you. I hope you take some time to look at our many blogs containing both of our accounts of the communications with the spirits and energy in each of these wonderful places.
Marchiene’s insight has brought further wealth of information on the experiences we’ve shared together. We would hike Sedona and surrounding area with our quadrangle maps, plotting out areas where we wanted to snoop around energy-wise, and see what impressions each of us picked up.
We found over the years of walking the land around here that two people’s observations and energy awareness were better than one. I would bring my drum, and Marchiene would bring her flute. We knew from a long time ago, that the spirits and energy loved both these musical instruments, and we played them for the area as a way of honoring it, but also “awakening” the energy of the place.
When we would go out to a sacred site to give back to it with flute and drum, we always carried a small sketch pad and colored pencils or pastel chalks. We would sit down, offer a gift of cornmeal to the area, then meditate. After the meditation was done, we would write down the impressions, messages or symbols that we received. Always, our individual experiences would dove-tail into one another’s impressions of the energy/area. Sometimes, the global water snake, Bololokan (Yavapai-Apache stories) would show up, blessing us and the area. At other times, Grandmother Komwida (Yavapai-Apache stories) would come and bless us and work with the area energy as well.
No matter where we traveled in our region of Arizona performing the above rituals, the area always felt so harmonious and peaceful when we left. Over the years we tried to get to all these sacred sites to continue the connection between human and the unseen spirits/energy of the land. It was a wonderful time in our lives and one of the most gratifying to be able to give back and become a part of something larger than ourselves. It also helped heal the land. To us, that was important. Humans usually take from Mother Earth and all her relations, so we wanted to give back to her. We hope you will try it and see for yourself how you can connect with the MAGIC that when you are part of something positive, of the Light, becomes intrinsic to the weaving of energy/spirits/yourself. Give it a try. You don’t need a drum and you don’t need to play a flute. But you know, they love when someone sings to them. And everyone can sing!
Read the accounts of our trip to Vultee Arch and you’ll see what I mean. It’s always enriching and fun to have a hiking partner who is in sync with you.
