Walking the Land with Marchiene in Michigan
My hiking sister for many of our walking the land investigations, lives in Douglas, Michigan, on the lake. I asked if she would do it again, up in her area, and see what energies and magic was nearby. She agreed. Here is her experience.
Also, for those who want to try this? Here is a FREE download of the WTL Worksheet that I use, and I hope you will too:

Marchiene’s Walking the Land, April 2021, Douglas, Michigan
I felt a strong call this evening right after supper to go out on a walk to a meadow nearby where there is a Great Grandmother Evergreen Tree.
But this would be no ordinary walk. This would be walking the land, which means, at the very least, going out with a sacred intention to honor the land and the spirits who dwell there, and to offer blessings and gratitude. I also intended to listen for any wisdom they might wish to offer me.
Here in Michigan at this time of year, it is light until 8:30 pm now. It was 6:30 when I started out, so I had plenty of time, and could pause and take in the fresh air, the flowers and their fragrance, the sweet sound of birdsong, and the wonderful trees that live around here on the shores of Lake Michigan. It is like living in a forest, only there is a Great Lake, one of the largest in the world, right on the edge of where we live!
I noticed myrtle starting to bloom, daffodils still blooming, forsythia blooming too, and the first blossoming rhododendron.
I paused especially by the home of a neighbor who has created an official wildlife habitat on her yard and grounds. Isn’t that a great idea? I wonder where else it could be done. Maybe some of you would like to give it a try.
When I reached the entrance to the meadow where Great Grandmother Evergreen lives, I paused to ask permission to walk the land, offer blessings, and honor the spirits who live there. Having received permission, I offered some birdseed I brought along. Then I walked slowly through the meadow, admiring the things growing there, and soon found myself near Great Grandmother Evergreen.
I paused between two saplings which flanked the path, knowing they were a gateway. I could feel the shift in energy just beyond them. Once again, I asked and received permission to continue, and gave my cornmeal offering.
Grandmother Evergreen’s inviting low branch. Marchiene asked her for permission to sit on it and rest her back against the trunk and Grandmother invited her to sit with her.
As I stepped into the energy field of Great Grandmother Evergreen, I felt her deep sense of strength, stability, and majesty. She towered high, high into the sky. Her branches stretched way out from her huge trunk in all directions, and draped down to the ground, creating a wonderful secret enclosure into which I slowly walked with great respect and appreciation. Once in Her Sacred Enclosure, I prayed and sang in the four directions, and then up to Grandfather Sky and Grandmother Earth, offering seeds as special prayers and songs. I found then that I could lean against a huge branch that ran parallel to the ground, and it supported my lower back so comfortably I could have stood there leaning into Grandmother Evergreen for hours. Far off in the meadow, between gaps in the branches, I could see a herd of deer grazing in the new grass, and I sent them blessings as well. I asked for any wisdom the spirits of the land wanted to give me and I heard these words in my heart: “If more of you humans would come out on the land with love and blessings, and humbly with respect, this whole earth would flourish far more than it is now, when so many of you ignore and exploit the land and its inhabitants.
“I will do this again—and again—” I whispered as I prepared to leave Great Grandmother Evergreen’s embrace. Then, with a full and grateful heart, I slowly meandered back through the meadow to the lakeshore where I live.
Marchiene has found an old, wise tree, Grandmother Evergreen, in her backyard! You too, can find one in your area as well. Take your cornmeal as a gift, “talk” (mental telepathy) to your new friend the tree, and feel her. She will more than likely invite you to sit with her, too!
